Independent Living Grants

Independent living grants provide resources to individuals with significant disabilities, and the funds do not have to be paid back.  The purpose is to empower disabled individuals with independence and productivity, and to integrate them into society. Independent living provides financial assistance to provide, expand, and improve independent living.

Most people apply for this grant when the are planning to leave their current residential or institutional accommodation and want to live on their own.  Also the circumstances could involve you needing to move back home because of a recently diagnosed disability or serious illness.

Eligibility is based on the presence of a significant physical or mental impairment, the presence of a significant limitation in the ability to function independently in the family or community or to engage in or continue in employment.  There is a reasonable expectation that services will assist the individual to improve the ability to function independently.
The State agency must certify the availability of the State funds for matching purposes.  The individual should consult the official designated as the contact in their State for the information relating the process of applying for the grant.  The standard application forms are furnished by the Federal agency.

Independent Living Grants enhance the quality of life for a significant number of people with disabilities.  This enables individuals with disabilities to access independent living skills, training, and counseling.
