Independent living apartments are often referred to as Congregate Living, Retirement Communities, or Senior Apartments. These apartments are designed specifically for independent senior adults who wish to enjoy a lifestyle filled with recreational, educational and social activities with other seniors. The cost is dependent on the market rate. Some apartments are subsidized to cater to seniors with limited incomes.
These communities are for older adults who are able to live on their own, however, enjoy the security and conveniences of community living. Some communities offer an enriched lifestyle with organized social and recreational programs as a part of everyday activities. Some offer an extensive recreational program including:
- Reading/Library Lounges
- Swimming Pools
- Spas
- Exercise facilities
- Clubhouse
- Craft and Activity Centers
Others provide housing with only a minimal amount of amenities or services.
Health care is normally not provided in your fees, however, many independent living apartment communities allow you to pay for a nurse or health assistant to help with personal care and medication management.
